The Mombasa – Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway opened to passenger service on 1 May 2017, whereupon Rift Valley Railways (RVR) suspended their Nairobi - Mombasa long distance passenger service on the old metre gauge line to "enable RVR to reorganize their services". Rift Valley Railways' 25 year concession was prematurely terminated from 31 July 2017, when Kenya Railways Corporation (Kenya Railways) commenced running their own services. Commercial freight began on 1 January 2018. An extension from Nairobi to Suswa was completed in October 2019. A second phase would see the line extended to Malaba, near the border with Uganda, and eventually to Kampala. However, it is doubtful that this will ever happen.

This was followed by a 120 km extension from Nairobi to Naivasha inland container depot for freight and then to Suswa, completed in October 2019. Kenya hopes to resume construction in July on the remaining sections: Phase 2B from Naivasha to Kisumu (262.3 km) and Phase 2C from Kisumu to Malaba (102 km) on the Ugandan border. It had seemed doubtful that this would happen as China had reduced its funding. However, the Export-Import Bank of China (Exim Bank) has now committed to funding these remaining sections

Recent and future changes

After flooding in April 2024, the metre gauge service from Nairobi to Kisumu officially resumed on 6 December 2024: Fridays only: Nairobi 18:30 Kisumu 06:30 (Saturday); Sundays only: Kisumu 18:30 Nairobi 0635 (Monday). Kisumu Safari train.

The 472 km Mombasa – Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) opened to passenger service on 1 May 2017, whereupon Rift Valley Railways (RVR) suspended their Nairobi - Mombasa long distance passenger service on the old metre gauge line to "enable RVR to reorganize their services". Rift Valley Railways' 25 year concession was prematurely terminated from 31 July 2017, when Kenya Railways Corporation (Kenya Railways) commenced running their own services. Commercial freight began on 1 January 2018.
