Note: the railway in Ecuador became bankrupt in 2020 and ceased operating. Money is being raised to restart operations, hopefully in 2023.
Gauge
- 1067 mm (3 feet 6 inches) for railways.
- 1435 mm (4 feet 8½ inches) Standard for metro and tramway.
Electrification
- 750 V DC for Cuenca Tramway
- 1500 V DC for Quito Metro
Rule of the road
Mainly single track but not known on metro/tramway.
Metros
The Quito Metro is currently shut down with re-opening not expected until December 2023.
Trams
The standard gauge Cuenca Tramway opened 25 May 2020.
Recent and Future Changes
Recent Changes
The Quito Metro official inauguration was on 21 December 2022 and commercial service started on 2 May 2023. However the system was shut down on 11 May 2023, after technical problems.
Future Changes
The Quito Metro is now not expected to re-open until December 2023 with full operation expected in the second quarter of 2024.
